Overview - Our Town

Kenilworth is a small town, with a population of less than 300, in the beautiful upper Mary Valley Country, behind the Blackall Range and only about one and a half hours drive north of Brisbane. The Mary River flows North from Maleny, through Conondale, Kenilworth, Gympie, Tiaro, Maryborough, and then into the sea opposite Frazer Island.

The town retains its 1920's atmosphere and, for the visitor, has a surprising amount of interest with a very engaging historical museum and a good range of shops, two art galleries and a cheese, yoghurt and ice-cream factory.

The Kenilworth State Forest, adjacent to the Town, provides excellent opportunities for horse riding, walking and fishing. The area has a wide variety of options for accomodation from basic camping to luxury retreats.

A drive taking in Eumundi, Kenilworth and Maleny will provide a stunning variety of scenery, great opportunities for shopping and a wonderful choice of eateries.

We are fifty minutes from the coast and one and a half hours from Brisbane by car.

MARY RIVER CONSERVATION

Kenilworth Mary River Group meeting 17th July 2010. Council Officers explains the Park Project draft plan.

RIVERSIDE PARKS

During local meetings at the river on 17th July 2010, Sunshine Coast Regional Council Officers presented concept plans for Isaac Moore Park and the Kenilworth River Park, based on suggestions received at previous public meetings. Discussion of the River Park plan centered on including a shelter and picnic table, a grassed walking track, unobtrusive car parking and limitations on vehicular access. A questionnaire was provided for residents to return comments and further suggestions. This feedback has resulted in the revised plans presented in April 2011 and accessible below.

Download the Isaac More Park Concept Plan from here (PDF file).
Download the Kenilworth River Park Concept Plan from here (PDF file) - note that this is now modified to move the parking area out of the park to the end of Charles Street.
Email your comments/suggestions to Council here.

Currently, the River Park has been re-grassed and bollards have been installed to prevent vehicular access to the Park and riverside (see photo). Revegetation of the river banks will follow.

HABITAT CONSERVATION

All wildlife on the Mary is threatened by encroaching human activity. Of particular concern are those species whose habitat is restricted to this River. Of these, the Mary River Lungfish and the Mary River Turtle are critically endangered. The Mary River Turtle was identified as late as 1994 and is the only species in its genus, so loosing it would extinguish the whole genus. This makes it a particular concern of conservation bodies, not only in Australia but across the world. Preventing disturbance of nesting sites on the sandy banks of the River, at Kenilworth and elsewhere, is critical to the survival of this species.

RIVER PARK SEAT PROJECT

The Sunshine Coast Council has funded the design of a park seat to celebrate the Mary River. Details of the project can be seen here (PDF file). The design competition was won by Wayne Markwort - see his website at www.waynemarkwortstone.com. A sketch of the design can be seen here.

Save the endangered Mary River Turtle.

ARTS & CULTURAL HUB PROJECT

Click to see a larger (PDF) version of this planOn Wednesday 17 August 2011, at a Chamber of Commerce Public Forum meeting, Kenilworth Arts Council Inc. presented information about its bid to achieve funding for an "Arts & Cultural Hub" to be built on redundant Queensland Government land. The meeting strongly supported the proposal.

This facility will be a new centre for the performing and creative arts, taking its place as part of the Mary Valley Arts Trail and providing workshop accommodation for a wide range of creative arts, a performance and exhibition space, and a Mary River Interpretation Pavilion intended to be a work of art in itself and to provide information about the history, ecology and geography of the River.

See a PDF version of the presentation here.

You can leave comments or questions about this Project on our GUESTBOOK (use green button above).

Alternatively comments can be emailed to the Kenilworth Arts Council.
